CART I

Introduction to Communications Access Realtime Translation
(CART)

Consumers have different needs for communications access, from simple sound amplification to services of a note-taker, a sign-language interpreter, a summary captionist or a CART provider (also called steno-captioner or realtime verbatim captionist). Having completed this course, the student should be able to answer questions about the CART environment and demonstrate sign-language fingerspelling.

CART II

Upon completion of this course students’ speed and accuracy should increase to a competence level for effective CART provision. Students also learn how to build and manage a translation dictionary for use in the CART profession.

CART III

This course provides students with an understanding of the conventions, equipment, software and materials used in the provision of CART services. Stenowriting students that can write realtime at the designated pre-requisite speed level receive instruction to become comfortable with ports, toggle and function keys, simultaneous displays, pins, holes and cables. This course requires the student to maintain a journal, which proves an invaluable tool when taking actual CART projection assignments. Students also participate in projecting CART display in a variety of ways to meet different needs and requirements of various types of clients

CART IV

This course is designed to familiarize students with the Code of Professional Ethics, general guidelines. Included are lessons on the different types of CART services clients seek, how to organize and bid for CART jobs and how to work as a team with clients and other professionals encountered in the provisions of CART services. The course also covers creating and formatting various types of business documents commonly used in the provision of CART services, and the requirements and procedures of various certifications available to qualified CART providers.
