Introduction to Communications Access Realtime Translation (CART)


Gayl Hardeman, RDR, CRR

Currently on assignment as a broadcast closed captioner for the Australian National Broadcasting Company in Sydney, New South Wales, Gayl holds Certified Realtime Reporter (CRR) and Registered Diplomatic Reporter (RDR) certifications. As a CART provider and advocate of full participation for the hearing-impaired, Gayl has traveled the world tirelessly both to train CART professionals and raise awareness within the hearing community about the need for, and value of, full access for all citizens.

A regular seminar leader for NCRA and state shorthand reporter associations across the United States, Gayl is an experienced professional educator who owned and taught in her own school of note reading and court reporting from 1972-1980. Gayl is also the founder of CARTwheel, the United States’ foremost organization and Web site for CART providers.

Gayl has achieved distinguished service awards for her contributions as a leader and steno-captioner from Florida and Massachusetts. She has served the following: Florida Court Reporters Association, as president from 1979-1980 and central region director from 1999-2001; NCRA, as dictation tapes chairperson from 1977-1980 and CART Task Force chairperson from 1999-2001; Sarasota Technical Community College, Sarasota, Flor., on the court reporting training program’s professional advisory board.

> Gayl has authored several textbooks, dictation and dictionary-building tapes and CART practice materials, as well as the "De-Puzzler" text included in Stenograph University Online’s course, Introduction to Communications Access Realtime Translation. She is a frequent contributor to the Journal of Court Reporting, the Florida Court Reporters’ Association Journal and other professional publications.

Gayl plans to return to her home in Tampa, Flor. when her assignment in Australia is complete, and continue her career as a steno-captioner, CART provider, educator, author and advocate.
